Time & Money in kindergarten to grade 5

Reading clocks, elapsed time, coins and making change. Daily Academy tracks it as its own skill, separately from the 9 others in math mountain, so it can never be averaged away by a subject score.

“It’s 2:40. What time is it in 35 minutes?”

What to watch for

Reading a clock face fine and stalling on elapsed time. They are different skills and the second one is the useful one.

Real time & money questions from the library

3 activities currently target this skill. These are actual questions, shown at the difficulty they are served at, with the explanation a child sees after answering.

  • Difficulty 1.8 — mid grade 1

A nickel is worth 5 cents.

How many cents are three nickels worth?

Hint shown after a miss: Count in fives: five, ten, …

Explanation: Three nickels are 15 cents. Counting in fives is the fastest way, and it is the same skip-counting used for the five times table.

  • Difficulty 1.8 — mid grade 1

Which of these makes exactly 25 cents?

Hint shown after a miss: A dime is 10 cents and a nickel is 5 cents. Add each set up.

Explanation: Two dimes and a nickel make 25 cents. The others make 30, 30 and 35 — every one of them too much, which is the mistake to watch for at a till.

  • Difficulty 1.8 — mid grade 1

    A sticker costs 30 cents.

You pay with two quarters. How many cents do you get back?

Hint shown after a miss: Two quarters is 50 cents. How far is 50 from 30?

Explanation: 50 − 30 = 20 cents back. Change is a subtraction, but shopkeepers usually count up from the price instead, which gives the same answer.

Common questions

How do I know if my child has time & money secure?

“It’s 2:40. What time is it in 35 minutes?” Reading a clock face fine and stalling on elapsed time. They are different skills and the second one is the useful one.

Which grade is time & money taught in?

It appears in both. Daily Academy does not gate skills by year group — a child is placed on a continuous difficulty scale during a five-minute intake, and time & money is then served at whatever level they are actually at, adjusted separately from every other skill.

See where your child stands on time & money

A five-minute intake places them on a continuous scale, and the skill map shows every skill separately from the first week. The daily mission is free.
