A child in grade 2 or 3 is likely behind in math if they still count on fingers for facts to 20, cannot explain what regrouping does, lose accuracy sharply when a calculation is wrapped in a word problem, or avoid math homework in a way they do not avoid other work. Any one of these is worth acting on; a report card grade is not enough to tell you.
Most children who struggle with word problems can do the arithmetic. What they cannot do is decide which operation the story is asking for — a reading comprehension task, not a math one. The test is simple: if accuracy is high on a bare calculation and drops sharply on the same calculation inside a story, more math drilling will not help.
By the end of grade 2, Canadian curricula generally expect a child to read, write and compare numbers to 100, add and subtract two-digit numbers with regrouping, recall addition and subtraction facts to 20 without counting, skip-count by 2s, 5s and 10s, name simple fractions of a whole, tell time to the quarter hour, and make amounts with coins.
By the end of grade 3, Canadian curricula generally expect a child to work with numbers to 1,000, add and subtract three-digit numbers with regrouping, understand multiplication as equal groups and division as sharing, compare fractions with the same denominator, solve two-step word problems and explain the choice of operation, tell time to the minute and calculate change.
Ask questions the text does not answer directly — why a character acted, what they will do next — and then ask which sentence proves it. Those two habits build inference and evidence, the two skills that separate reading fluently from understanding. Reading speed practice does not help; questions that cannot be answered by recall do.
In Canada, private one-to-one tutoring generally runs about $40–$80 an hour, and franchised learning centres about $150–$300 a month per child on a fixed schedule. Online learning programs and apps sit far below both, typically $10–$30 a month, and several — Khan Academy among them — are free.
For a child in grade 2 or 3 with an ordinary gap, online practice is usually worth it: it is inexpensive, it fits into twenty minutes, and it can find a specific weak skill that a report card averages away. For a diagnosed learning difficulty, or a child well behind and not catching up, a human tutor or a school assessment is the better spend.
For most children in grade 2 or 3, fifteen to twenty focused minutes on most days is more effective than one long weekly session. At this age attention, not time, is the limiting factor, and recall is built by frequent retrieval rather than by duration. A weekly hour with a tutor makes sense on top of that, not instead of it.
Fifteen to twenty minutes is the practical daily ceiling for focused academic practice at ages 7 to 9. Past that, most children continue to comply while learning very little, and the cost is that they start resisting the session itself. A short session that happens every day beats a long one that gets abandoned in three weeks.
A tutor diagnoses in real time, notices confusion a child cannot articulate, and provides the accountability of another person in the room. A learning app provides frequency, consistent difficulty targeting, and a record of every answer over months. They solve different problems, and for most children in grade 2 or 3 the app addresses the more common one.
No. Canada has no national curriculum — education is a provincial responsibility, and each province and territory writes its own. In practice, though, grade 2 and 3 expectations in math and reading are very similar across the country. What differs most is how the curriculum is organised and worded, and when a few topics are introduced.
Yes, it is screen time. The more useful distinction is not educational versus not, but whether the design ends the session or extends it. An app built around a finite daily task behaves differently from one built to maximise time in app, and that difference matters more for a 7 year old than the subject matter does.
