Grade 5 reasoning is about method: eliminating a whole group rather than testing one item, counting by structure rather than by listing, and noticing that an argument can reach a true answer through reasoning that does not work.

“All squares have four sides; this has four sides; so it is a square” gives the correct answer about a square and would give the wrong one about a rectangle. Being right by luck and being right by argument look identical from the outside.
Asked how many three-digit codes exist, a child who starts writing them out has already lost. Recognising that independent choices multiply is what turns an impossible list into one line of arithmetic.
Given nine coins and a balance, most children weigh coins against coins. Weighing groups against groups — and using the “balanced” result as information — is the move, and it is the same move as binary search later.

Why: Pour it in the bowl. Eating has to come after, because there is nothing to eat until then.

What is the rule?
Why: Two claps, then a stamp, over and over. Saying the rule out loud is what lets you keep going forever.

Which one is not an animal?
Why: A spoon. The rule is animals — and a spoon is a thing, not a living creature.

Why: Below the table. Under and below are two words for the same place.

Chiefly method: eliminating possibilities in groups, counting systematically, and separating whether an argument works from whether its conclusion is true. All three appear immediately in multi-step math and in reading for argument.
Because a single counterexample is the cheapest way to test reasoning, and children take to it readily. “Can you find a four-sided shape that is not a square?” does more for reasoning than a definition of validity ever will.
