What is genuinely new in grade 3?
- Multiplication and division as concepts, not yet as fluent facts. Understanding equal groups and arrays matters more this year than speed; fluency through 10 × 10 is usually a grade 4 expectation.
- Two-step problems. This is the year a question stops being one operation, and it is where most grade 3 difficulty concentrates.
- Explaining the reasoning. 'Show your thinking' starts appearing on assessments, and a child who pattern-matched their way through grade 2 is often found out here.
- Numbers past 100, which exposes any place-value understanding that was really just a memorised carrying procedure.
How do I check each one at home?

What is the most common grade 3 gap?
Word problems, and the reason is usually reading rather than math. A child whose accuracy is high on bare calculations and drops sharply on the same math inside a story has a comprehension gap. It is the single most misdiagnosed pattern at this age, because it looks like a math problem and responds to nothing that fixes math problems.
