Grade 2 math in Canada is mostly about numbers to 100: adding and subtracting with regrouping, recalling facts without counting up, and meeting fractions, time and money for the first time. What is a grade 2 child expected to do in math?

Canadian provinces write their curricula separately and word them differently, but the grade 2 expectations below are common across all of them. Daily Academy is skills-based rather than built to any one province’s document — see how it maps to your province.

  • Read, write and compare numbers to 100, and understand what the digits mean
  • Add and subtract two-digit numbers, including regrouping across ten
  • Recall addition and subtraction facts to 20 without counting on fingers
  • Skip-count by 2s, 5s and 10s, and see it as the start of multiplying
  • Name and compare simple fractions of a whole — halves, thirds, quarters
  • Tell time to the half and quarter hour, and make amounts with coins
  • Measure length and mass with standard units and choose a sensible one

Where grade 2 children usually get stuck

Regrouping is treated as a trick, not a reason

A child who can carry the one but cannot say what the one is has memorised a procedure. It holds until three-digit numbers arrive in grade 3, then falls over. Every question here explains the why after the answer, not just the what.

Counting on fingers past the point it should stop

Finger counting is fine while facts are being built and a problem once the working memory it eats is needed for something harder. Speed comes from repeated retrieval at the right difficulty, which is exactly what the daily warm-up does.

Fractions taught as a shape, not a quantity

Shading three of four boxes is not the same as knowing three quarters is close to a whole. Fraction questions here use pizzas, bars and number lines together so the quantity is what sticks.

    Why: 9 comes just before 10. Before means one less, not one more.

  • Number Sense

    There are 3 cats and 6 dogs.

    Are there more cats or more dogs?

    Why: There are more dogs. 6 is more than 3.

  • Addition

    Which one makes 5?

    Why: 4 + 1 = 5. The others make 2, 4 and 6.

  • Subtraction

    6 − 3 = ?

    Why: 6 − 3 = 3. Counting backwards is one way; knowing that 3 and 3 make 6 is a faster one.

By the end of grade 2, most Canadian curricula expect a child to read, write and compare numbers to 100, add and subtract two-digit numbers with regrouping, recall addition and subtraction facts to 20, skip-count by 2s, 5s and 10s, name simple fractions, tell time to the quarter hour and make amounts with coins.

How much math practice does a grade 2 child need each day?

Ten to fifteen focused minutes on most days beats an hour once a week. At this age the limiting factor is attention, not time available — a short daily session at the right difficulty builds recall faster than a long one that ends in resistance.
