The most common grade 3 pattern is a child who multiplies correctly on a calculation and loses accuracy the moment the same math is wrapped in a story. That is a comprehension gap, not an arithmetic one, and drilling times tables will not close it.
Facts recalled from a chant collapse under 7 × 8. Facts built from equal groups and arrays survive, because a forgotten one can be rebuilt. Multiplication questions here show the array before they ask for the answer.
Sharing 12 among 3, and finding how many 3s fit into 12, are two different questions with the same answer. Children who have only met one of them stall on the other.

Counting & Number Recognition
What number comes just before 10?
Why: 9 comes just before 10. Before means one less, not one more.
Number Sense
There are 3 cats and 6 dogs.
Are there more cats or more dogs?
Why: There are more dogs. 6 is more than 3.
Addition
Which one makes 5?
Why: 4 + 1 = 5. The others make 2, 4 and 6.
Subtraction
6 − 3 = ?
Why: 6 − 3 = 3. Counting backwards is one way; knowing that 3 and 3 make 6 is a faster one.

By the end of grade 3, most Canadian curricula expect a child to work with numbers to 1,000, add and subtract three-digit numbers with regrouping, understand multiplication and division as equal groups and sharing, compare simple fractions, solve two-step word problems, tell time to the minute and calculate change.
Usually because the difficulty is in the reading, not the math. A word problem asks a child to decide which operation is needed before doing it — a comprehension task. If accuracy drops sharply between a bare calculation and the same calculation inside a story, the fix is reading the question, not more drilling.
Multiplication facts are still being built in grade 3 and are usually expected to be fluent through 10 × 10 by the end of grade 4. Understanding multiplication as equal groups matters more at this stage than speed — recall built on that structure survives the moment a fact is forgotten.
