Main Idea in kindergarten to grade 5

Summing up what a whole passage is really about. Daily Academy tracks it as its own skill, separately from the 5 others in reading forest, so it can never be averaged away by a subject score.

“What was that whole page about, in one sentence?”

What to watch for

A retelling instead of a summary. Compressing is the skill; recalling is not.

Real main idea questions from the library

6 activities currently target this skill. These are actual questions, shown at the difficulty they are served at, with the explanation a child sees after answering.

  • Difficulty 2.2 — mid grade 2

What is this story mostly about?

Hint shown after a miss: Which part does Marcus remember years later, and why is that surprising?

Explanation: The snowball fight is the fun the story keeps setting aside. The shape of the story is Marcus noticing Ade, understanding why, and picking up a shovel himself.

  • Difficulty 2.2 — mid grade 2

Why does the story bother to mention Mrs Delaney?

Hint shown after a miss: The story never says 'Ade did it to help elderly neighbours'.

Explanation: One seventy-one-year-old walking home without slipping does the work of a whole explanation. That is showing rather than telling.

  • Difficulty 2.5 — mid grade 2

What is the main idea of this story?

Hint shown after a miss: Mr Halloran agrees the number is right. So what is his actual argument?

Explanation: He never disputes four hundred. His whole case is that counting visits tells you nothing about what the visits are for — that is the idea the whole story is built to demonstrate.

Common questions

How do I know if my child has main idea secure?

“What was that whole page about, in one sentence?” A retelling instead of a summary. Compressing is the skill; recalling is not.

Which grade is main idea taught in?

It appears in both. Daily Academy does not gate skills by year group — a child is placed on a continuous difficulty scale during a five-minute intake, and main idea is then served at whatever level they are actually at, adjusted separately from every other skill.

A five-minute intake places them on a continuous scale, and the skill map shows every skill separately from the first week. The daily mission is free.
